By definition, a zoo is:
- An establishment where wild animals (animals that are not normally kept in Great Britain) are kept for exhibition (other than a circus or pet shop)
- Where members of the public have access, with or without charge, on seven days or more in any period of twelve consecutive months
- It also includes zoos where the public are not admitted if a licence is in force
Applications for a zoo licence
- We must be given notice at least 2 months in advance of intention to apply
- Notice must be placed in local and national newspapers
- Notice at the local authority office that can be viewed by the public
Notice must specify the situation of the zoo and include:
- Kinds of animals, approximate numbers, accommodation, etc
- Approximate numbers and categories of staff
- Approximate number of visitors and vehicles provided for
- Approximate position and number of access points

Apply
Licences are granted for 4 years and a licence renewal is granted for 6 years.
Before granting a licence, we consider feedback from the Chief Constable, The Fire Authority, national institutions concerned with operation of zoos and any objector on grounds of health and safety. Zoos are also inspected before any decisions is taken.
