Funding approved for community projects in Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey
Two community projects for a hydro scheme, and school safety received funding approval today (25 September 2014) from Members of The Highland Council’s Nairn and Badenoch and Strathspey Area Committee.
Leader of the Nairn and Badenoch and Strathspey Area Committee, Councillor Liz MacDonald said: “I am delighted that members have approved funding which will have highly beneficial impacts on the local communities of Nairn, Kingussie .”
The community development company responsible for restoring a 90-year-old hydro scheme on the River Gynack that flows through Kingussie has been awarded £5,000 to install an all-abilities path, picnic tables and information boards. The works will benefit locals, visitors and schools in the area.
Through the Cycling Walking and Safer Streets Programme funded by the Scottish Government - pupils walking to and from Millbank Primary School in Nairn are to benefit from the installation of street lighting at an estimated cost of £8,000. New lighting will improve safety and access to the school from Mill Road by lighting the lane between housing and the railway bridge.
Allan Bryce, Highland Council’s Road Safety Officer said: “The improved lighting will encourage residents to walk to school all year round when the daylight and visibility is poor especially in winter months.”
A decision on an application for £10,000 to RSPB Scotland for wetland habitat restoration works at the RSPB Insh Marshes Nature reserve was deferred for further consulation with ward members.
