Benefits - Tax credits
-
Description
If you are responsible for at least one child or young person who normally lives with you, working or claiming benefits, you may qualify for Child Tax Credit.
If you work, but earn low wages, you may qualify for Working Tax Credit.
Individuals who earn too much to qualify for Working Tax Credits may still be eligible to claim Child Tax Credits. Please note that both benefits are means tested.
The amount of tax credits you get depends on:
- How many children you have living with you
- If you are single or part of a couple
- Whether you work - and how many hours you work
- Lone parents, people with a disability or those aged over 60 must work at least 16 hours a week
- Couples with children for Working Tax Credits must work 24 hours or more between them with one person working at least 16 hours
- Single people must be aged over 25 and work at least 30 hours a
week
- If you pay for any childcare
- If you or any child living with you has a disability
To claim tax credits you have to fill in a claim form.
