Progress
The Fort William Active Travel Masterplan was published in September 2019.
The most recent key developments are as follows:
- The Black Parks active travel route is now traffic free with signage and bollards in place and forms a key part of the Spine Route for active travel in the town.
- BEAR Scotland are undertaking designs to develop an active travel connection between Loch Linnhe Caravan Park and Corpach Industrial Estate. They are also working on designs to widen the active travel route beside the A830 across Blar Mor to Lochaber High School, but this has been delayed by local biodiversity concerns and may only go ahead on the north verge of the A830.
- Lighting has been installed on Soldiers Bridge as part of the Flood Protection Scheme; funding for this was provided by HITRANS.
- A range of new cycle shelters will be installed at FW West End Car Park (shelter & racks), Nevis Centre (racks) and Caol shopping centre (shelter & racks), also funded by HITRANS. The steps at the underpass by the Travel Centre have also been improved.
- A feasibility study has been undertaken to investigate a possible active travel route between Corpach and Glenfinnan.
- Transport Scotland are investigating a potential pedestrian crossing on the A830 at Banavie swing bridge. They are also investigating a potential active travel route between Spean Bridge and Roy Bridge. Both of these studies will take place in 2023-24.
- Transport Scotland have designed an active travel link from Spean Bridge to the Leanachan crossroads to the west of the village. This will provide connectivity between Spean Bridge and the Forestry route to Nevis Range. TS aim to install temporary infrastructure (unbound surfacing) on this link in time for the World Cycling Championships and make it permanent as a legacy investment afterwards.
- The e bike share scheme HI-BIKE Fort William continues to be well used, and additional hubs are now open at Blar Mor, Upper Achintore and Glen Nevis Campsite.
