Apply for a licence - Dangerous wild animals

According to the law, dangerous wild animals licenses can only run for a calendar year. If you apply to start operating before the end of the current year your licence will expire on 31 December this year and you will not be eligible for any refund on your application fee. The fees cover administration costs which are the same regardless of how long the licence runs for.  Renewal reminders are sent out around October.

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for a dangerous wild animal licence.

A licence will not be issued where the applicant has been disqualified or convicted of an offence under:

• The Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976
• The Protection of Animals Acts 1911 to 1964
• The Protection of Animals (Scotland) Act 1912 to 1964
• The Pet Animals Act 1951
• The Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963
• The Riding Establishments Act 1964 and 1970
• The Breeding of Dogs Act 1973
• The Animal Health Act 1981
• The Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006

A licence for a dangerous wild animal does not need to be applied for where the dangerous wild animal is kept in:

1. A zoo within the meaning of the Zoo Licensing Act 1981 for which a licence is in force (or is not for the time being required) under that Act
2. A circus
3. Premises licensed as a pet shop under the Pet Animals Act 1951
4. A place which is a designated establishment within the meaning of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986

On receipt of your application, we appoint a veterinary surgeon or practitioner to inspect the premises where the animal will be held. The vet gives their professional opinion on whether the premises is suitable. We can seek payment for the costs of the inspection from the applicant. Environmental Health will then consider, process and determine the application.

A dangerous wild animal licence is not transferable and if your application is refused you can make a request to us for a statement of our reasons. You also have the right of appeal to the Sheriff Court.
