Visiting Household Waste Recycling Centres
There is new guidance for the storage and disposal of upholstered furniture, which includes sofas, chairs and beanbags. There are changes to which Household Waste Recycling Centres accept these items, please check individual centres for details.
Important notice
Waste accepted at Household Waste Recycling Centres
- Bulky household items - such as sofas, mattresses, rolls of carpet and garden tools.
- Cardboard - flatten all cardboard before arriving.
- Engine oil - (accepted at some sites, check individual site details)
- The Inverness and Fort William Household Waste Recycling Centres are currently unable to accept engine oil.
- Garden waste
- General household waste
- Glass bottles and jars (accepted at most sites, check individual site details)
- Household Batteries (accepted at some sites, check individual site details)
- Small electrical items - for example toasters, kettles, hair dryers, gaming controls
- Large electrical items - for example fridges, electric cookers, washing machines
- Light Bulbs including energy efficient bulbs and fluorescent tubes(accepted at some sites, check individual site details)
- Plasterboard (accepted at some sites, in cars only and limited to one visit per day, check individual site details)
- Scrap metal (accepted at some sites, check individual site details)
- Soil and rubble (accepted at most sites in cars only and limited to one visit per day, check individual site details)
- Textiles (accepted at most sites, check individual site details)
- Wood - (accepted at some sites, check individual site details) such as furniture and garden fencing. Doors and similar waste from small DIY activities are accepted in cars only and limited to one visit per day
Vehicles permitted at Household Waste Recycling Centres
The following vehicles are permitted at HWRC
- Cars and small non-commercial 4x4 vehicles.
- Adapted vehicles for disabled use
- Vans (under 3.5 tonnes maximum gross weight) and trailers - Some sites require booking in advance

All other vehicles are not permitted (this includes horse boxes or large animal trailers).
