Nairn Flood Protection Study
Within the Highland & Argyll and Findhorn, Nairn and Speyside Local Flood Risk Management Plans there is an action for The Highland Council to carry out hydraulic modelling and a Flood Protection Study (FPS) for the River Nairn.
This project seeks to identify options for reducing flood risk in Nairn from the River Nairn and from the coast. This includes the Auldearn Burn.
A model has been built which predicts the potential extent of flooding to Nairn in areas that are adjacent to the River Nairn and Auldearn Burn and what the predicted costs are from flooding.
Further study has been undertaken to review the coastal erosion and flood risk along the seafront, identifying areas that are likely to have increased pressure from coastal events in the future and suggests various actions which could be taken now and, in the future, to help reduce flood risk to local communities.

Future work packages may progress subject to a suitable business case and availability of funding.
This includes work to:
- identify a preferred option to protect against the known and predicted flooding
- formal consultation on the preferred option
- detail of the design of the preferred option
- construction of a potential scheme
Any future proposals to develop the study and ultimately works are dependent on being included in our Capital Programme.
All enquiries regarding the scheme should be sent to rivernairnfps@highland.gov.uk.
