Contaminated land
Planning and potentially contaminated land
Potential land contamination is a material planning consideration. The Contaminated Land Team checks every planning application made within our area for an indication of former potentially contaminative use. We then advise colleagues within the Development and Infrastructure Service if further information is required for a particular site. The planning applicant is responsible for demonstrating that the site is suitable for its proposed use.
Additional information required by the Contaminated Land Team could include a history of the site, completion of an agricultural building and farm steadings questionnaire or site investigation. The information can be submitted before or during your planning application, or may be required as part of a condition on your planning consent.

Petrol stations
Safely decommissioning a petrol station so that it is not licensed to store petrol means that the site will not pose an explosive hazard. It does not mean that the site is free from potential contamination. If you are considering redeveloping a former petrol station, please contact us for advice.
