What can I do to support someone in crisis?

If the person has taken an overdose or has a life threatening self harm injury, contact Emergency Services telephone 999.

A mental health crisis is generally when a person's health deteriorates to the point where they need urgent help from professional services.  Early warning signs can include:

  • Thinking about suicide or acting on suicidal thoughts
  • Having an episode of psychosis (where the person might experience or believe things that others do not)
  • Doing something that could put themselves or other people at risk

If the person seems really unwell and you have concerns for their safety, you should encourage them to seek help from a professional Service:

  • GP Surgery or Samaritans 08457 90 90 90 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
  • NHS 24 telephone 111 if the person needs medical help but it is not a 999 emergency
