Schizophrenia

What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a change in mental function where thoughts and perceptions are altered and a person may not be able to distinguish their own thoughts and ideas from reality.

The onset of schizophrenia may be rapid, with symptoms developing over several weeks, or it may be slow and develop over months or years.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia & Possible Impacts in the Workplace

  • Withdrawing from others or spending a lot of time alone
  • Lack of interest in personal hygiene
  • Suspiciousness
  • Moodiness
  • Blunted emotion
  • Hallucinations - hearing or seeing things that do not exist
  • Delusions – unusual beliefs not based on reality
  • Muddled thoughts based on hallucinations or delusions
  • Disorganised (confused or incoherent) speech
  • Unusual behaviour or postures
  • Muscle immobility or stupor
  • Excessive muscle activity; repetition of movement or speech
  • Psychosis

If you think you have symptoms of Schizophrenia, contact your GP or have a discussion with your line manager who may refer you to Occupational Health.
