Cold call control zones
How to set up a zone
Before you establish a zone there are several things that need to be considered:
- Demand
We will be able to give details of reported doorstep crime figures but as there is widespread under reporting of doorstep crime you should speak to local residents - Area to be covered
Zones can be a few streets or a small housing estate. Zones work best within clear, identifiable boundaries for example an estate with one entrance serving the area - Who will operate the zone
Two of the zones operating within the Highland Council area were set up by Community Councils. Zones could also be established by church organisations, neighbourhood watches or other groups that are active in the community. Each zone should appoint a person to act as CCCZ Champion. This person will be the first point of contact for Trading Standards. They will also make sure street signs in the area are intact and advise new residents of the zone’s operation - Funding
Control zones need funding to pay for signs and door stickers. Current zones have been funded by either Community Councils or the community itself - Consultation
Once you have considered these questions, residents within the proposed area will need to be consulted about the zone
The stages involved in setting up a Zone are outlined in our Action plan.
