Avoiding rogue doorstep traders
If you need work done on your property, source a trader yourself. If you are eligible, contact our Handyperson service.
If you are confronted by a doorstep trader:
- Never sign up to anything on the spot
- Be suspicious of any trader that wants to start work right away
- Beware of pressure selling tactics. These can include being told about a special offer, being told that the work is essential or being told that your neighbours have signed up for a service
- Be wary of flattery. A trader may try and make you feel at ease by pretending that they have things in common with you
- Always ask any trader for identification. Be sure to check that they belong to the organisation that they claim to be a member of. Always contact the organisation directly yourself using a phone number that you have looked up. Do not rely on a number that the trader has supplied as it could be fraudulent
- Make sure the back door of your home is locked and windows are shut before answering the door to an unexpected caller. Some unwanted doorstep traders act as a front for distraction burglaries. This involves distracting the resident while someone enters from another entrance to burgle the property
- Never hand over a cash deposit
- Do not be afraid to say NO
It may be useful to become involved in Police Scotland's Nominated Neighbour scheme By doing this, any caller at your home can be verified by a neighbour to make sure they are genuine.
