Employment in the Highlands
Transition from military to civilian life is a time of great change, so forward planning is essential. Careers Transition Partnership provides resettlement advice to all members of the Armed Forces, where you can find out more about out what programme you're entitled to.
Skills Development Scotland is the Scottish Government's national skills agency and works closely with Careers Transition Partnership. They provide support for service leavers, veterans and families, including those of serving personnel.
Support to help you find a job is available from a wide range of organisations. Links to some of them are listed below:

- Myjobscotland - vacancies in education, local authority, emergency services, charity sector
- NHS careers and Vacancies
- Teach in Scotland - guidance on becoming a teacher, returning to teaching or transferring your teaching qualifications
- Forces Recruitment Service - ex-military recruitment specialists
- Recruit 4 Spouses - employment support for spouses of military personnel
- RFEA (The Forces Employment Charity) - life-long support, jobs and training for service leavers and veterans
- Salute my Job - help ex-service personnel, including reservists, into employment and provide consultancy, recruitment and training services to employers
Starting your own business
Organisations that provide advice on starting your own business are:
- Business Gateway Highland provides expert local business advice and practical help on starting and running your own business
- Careers Transition Partnership provides advice on starting your own business
- New Enterprise Allowance supports you to start up or develop a business
- X-Forces runs a variety of training courses which are supported by strategic partners to ensure that delivery is free of charge
Working for Highland Council
The Highland Council welcomes applications from the Armed Forces community.
Candidates who have indicated on their application form that they have been a member of the Armed Forces (Regular or Reservist) or are a spouse or partner, or dependent of serving Armed Forces personnel who meet the essential requirements for the vacancy will be invited for interview under the guaranteed interview scheme.

We are delighted to have been awarded the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award in 2021 recognising the significant value which our Armed Forces Community brings to Highland.
This follows on from signing its own Armed Forces Covenant in November 2018 having previously received a Silver Award in 2015.
