Unauthorised roadside camps

Our policy for managing unauthorised camping sets out the multi-agency responsibilities and arrangements for responding to roadside encampments.

It provides clear guidance to support consistent advice and information about unauthorised camping on both land we own and land in private ownership. A Good Neighbour and Visitor Agreement is included

As well as land ownership, the following indicators will influence the response and management of unauthorised encampments:

  • The number of vehicles in relation to the size of the area
  • The intended length of stay
  • Any exceptional needs, for example, health needs
  • Road safety issues
  • Public health issues
  • What the land is normally used for and any urgent need for it
  • Actual or potential damage to the land
  • The effect on the local community
