Lochalsh Junior Pipe Band are British Champions
Following several competition successes in recent times, Lochalsh Junior Pipe Band travelled to the British Pipe Band Championships in Paisley on Saturday 20 May with high hopes which were not to be dashed as they achieved a clear first place in the Novice B section, and are now British Champions.
Highland Council Music Instructors Niall Stewart (pipes) and Drew Caldwell (drums), who tutor the band and teach the members during their weekly lessons are rightly proud of the achievements.
They stated that “…there is a high level of commitment from pupils and families to the work of the band and this has paid off recently with great achievements for such a young group.”
Highland Council’s Music Development Officer, Norman Bolton, added: “We have a tradition of supporting youth music in all its forms right across Highland and the determination of this group to make the most of opportunities and develop is a testament to the structure in their teaching and the commitment given to many hours of additional work that goes into this level of achievement.
“The aspects of teamwork and discipline involved in participating in a musical activity of this nature allow our young people to develop skills which will stand them in good stead in the wider world of work and community well beyond their years at school."
