Stronger penalties for people sharing intimate images

Prosecuting people who share or threaten to share intimate images without consent will be easier under a new law which comes into force this month.

From 3 July 2017, those convicted the offence could face up to five years in prison under the Abusive Behaviour and Sexual Harm (Scotland) Act 2016.

A public information campaign will raise awareness of the new legislation to ensure people understand that this behaviour is criminal and the severe penalties that it now carries.

The bold campaign also aims to increase the understanding of the many forms the crime can take, including the act of sharing and the threat to share intimate images. Exploring the consequences for those who are affected to drive home how the crime is affecting lives.
