Bun-sgoil Shlèite supports Refugee Week
After a very successful range of events to mark Refugee Week and International Refugee Day, Bun-sgoil Shlèite teaching staff Gwen Culbertson and Janice Dougan were overwhelmed and humbled with the community response from Sleat and Strath.
From the community café where some delicious baking was on offer they raised £312 and with the clothes collection they gathered 143 black bags of adult and children’s clothes, toiletries, blankets, sleeping bags and even a tent!
With sponsorship from Johnny MacPherson of MacPherson Electricals to get them all over to Mallaig on the ferry and with support from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig lending their van and man-power from Eòghainn Morrison; P1-3 pupils met with Jude Monson from The Highlands Supports Refugees to deliver their enormous collection.
Pupils also enjoyed a visit from Rosie Woodhouse who came to speak to the whole school about her experiences in Jordan in refugee camps as well as cultural celebration of food, music and art inspired by Syria, Aghanistan, Greece and Turkey.
Mrs Culbertson and Mrs Dougan would like to thank everyone who helped in every way, especially The Shed at Armadale for providing ice creams on their return.
The large collection of clothes and other items shall now be making its’ way to Conon Bridge where The Highlands Supports Refugees are based where it will be sorted into a storage container and then it shall be shipped to wherever needs it most.
