Corran Ferry Update

An underwater survey was carried out yesterday in the presence of two MCA surveyors. The survey revealed only minimal damage to the hull and very slight damage to one of the propeller blades.

Technical advice has been sought and the MCA are considering this at present.  Indications are positive that the slight damage would not pose any significant risk to the normal operation of the propeller.

Meanwhile, the German steering engineer arrived on site late yesterday afternoon and carried out his assessment. He has parts with him and is attempting a repair this morning.

Trials are also underway with another vessel operator with an option to provide a foot passenger service as a contingency, if required.

The Council have requested electronic signage operated by Traffic Scotland on the A82, however roadworks and a yellow warning for rain are currently being prioritised for messaging. Information is however included on the Traffic Scotland website.

Cllr Andrew Baxter, Chairman of the Lochaber Area Committee said: “Everything possible is being done to restore the Corran Ferry service. I am hopeful of news of a positive outcome later today, however arrangements are being put in place for foot passengers as a contingency.”
