As part of the 2017 Highland Archaeology Festival, a number of geocaches have been hidden throughout the Highlands.

"There are so many wonderful sites in the Highlands to explore," explained Kirsty Cameron, Highland Council Archaeologist. ‘We wanted to hide caches where people can discover more about our rich heritage. We’ve also hidden some small objects in our caches during the festival."

Geocaching is a popular activity worldwide, an outdoor treasure hunt where hidden caches can be found using GPS-enabled devices. Finders log their visits on a log book in the cache and on the geocaching website www.geocaching.com. The caches on the HAF2017 geocache trail are all at sites of historic interest or near museums. Further details about the HAF2017 geocaches can be found on the HAF website www.highlandarchaeologyfestival.org.

The Highland Archaeology Festival, now in its 24th year, runs this year from 30th September to 15th October. Organisations, museums and individuals have offered over 100 events and exhibitions throughout the Highlands. It includes three trails: an object trail, the geocache trail and a number of self-guided walks you can explore throughout the year. Details are already posted on the HAF website www.highlandarchaeologyfestival.org, and a printed brochure is now available at libraries, service points, tourist information points.

Highland Archaeology Festival is part of Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017.
