Following the approval by the Inverness City Area Committee on 14 September, The Highland Council is planning to run a 6 month pilot project to tackle issues around trade waste in the city centre and consultation with city centre businesses and the public  is now underway.

The trade waste project is essentially aimed at helping make Inverness a cleaner, greener and safer city which will encourage more visitors to the city centre and help create a positive image for the benefit of all.

The pilot project’s primary objective is to change the current waste collection practices in a selected area within the city centre, and if successful, the project will be rolled out across the whole of the city centre.

Other UK cities including Westminster,  Edinburgh, and Manchester have successfully carried out such projects and in June Glasgow city council embarked on a similar pilot project.

During this consultation period, which runs until Wednesday 1 November, the council is raising awareness about the proposals and looking for comments from the city centre businesses, relevant stakeholders and members of the public.

The Provost of Inverness, Cllr Helen Carmichael said: “The key objectives of the pilot it to reduce the number of trade waste containers on the streets and improve the look and feel of the city centre. It is also about reducing public safety issues by removing the tripping hazards which restrict access to visually impaired or disabled residents and visitors. We are keen for businesses to take part in the consultation and to give us their comments and feedback so council officials working on the project can fully evaluate the impact and benefits of the project in order to make recommendations to the Inverness City Area Committee on potentially rolling out the programme to other city centre locations.”

A dedicated website has already been set up to provide further information regarding the project and answers to frequently asked questions.

There are several ways people can provide feedback, including taking part in an online survey which is available from the website www.highland.gov.uk/InvernessCityTradeWaste

Once all responses are reviewed a finalised proposal will be put forward to the Inverness City Committee at its next meeting on Thursday 30 November.
