Two Inverness joiners have unearthed a piece of advertising history while refurbishing a shop unit in the Inverness Victorian Market.

Peter Dyer and Sam MacLean with D.Y. Fraser Joinery discovered massive lettering adorning the interior gable-end wall of a former newsagent’s shop that is being refurbished for re-letting in Unit 3 of the Victorian Market Arcade.

The gold lettering advisertising a national newspaper proclaims: “THE SCOTSMAN for FACTS and INFORMED COMMENT.”

Located in the Old Town area of Inverness, the Victorian Market is an asset of the Inverness Common Good Fund which is managed by Highland Council on behalf of the Trustees of the Common Good Fund.

Robert McCubbin, Highland Council’s Senior Maintenance Officer explained: “Peter and Sam revealed the vintage advertisement when they were removing false walls and mid-height flooring that had been installed to create a loft space.

“They immediately brought their discovery to our attention and we contacted Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, Curator Matthew Withey to ensure that a record was made of this interesting piece of social history before refurbishment works continued on the unit.”

Once the works have been completed the Unit in the Victorian Market Arcade will be let by Highland Council. Details of the let will be made available in due course on the Council’s website at: https://www.highland.gov.uk/directory/25/property_for_rent
