Police and partners launch Festive Safe Highlands roadshows

Issued in partnership with Police Scotland

Police Scotland will be hosting a series of events across the Highlands and Islands offering crime prevention advice throughout December.

The roadshows have been organised by officers from the Highlands and Islands Preventions and Interventions Unit and will include input from a wide variety of partner agencies.

The events, which start tomorrow in Inverness, will allow officers the chance to meet members of the public and offer crime prevention advice about safe partying, shopping, online activity, home security and others.

Officers will be joined in the initiative by representatives from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Highland Council Road Safety Group, Trading Standards, Inverness Women's Aid, Rape and Sexual Abuse Service Highland (RASASH) and Adult Support and Protection.

Each agency will be able to provide the public with safety advice or assist members of the public who may need support.

Constable Ross Polworth of the Preventions and Interventions Unit said: "This is a good opportunity for us to meet members of the public and offer advice to people across a wide variety of different areas.

"The festive season naturally sees an increase in the number of people shopping or partying in our communities across the north of Scotland and we want to make sure they do as safely as possible.

"We will be at a variety of locations across the region so feel free to stop and have a chat about any subject you want to discuss."

Mark McGinty, Trading Standards Team leader, states “Trading Standards are delighted to be partnering Police Scotland in this campaign.

"At this time of year many of us have our thoughts on the holidays and of giving, unfortunately the scammers and illegal traders are only thinking about taking your money.

" I would urge anyone who thinks they have spotted a scam or may have become a victim of a scam to come and speak to us during this campaign or contact the Citizens Advice Helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or visit their website www.citizensadvice.org.uk/scotland/consumer, where advice on a range of consumer issues can be found.”
