Schools Fund Benefits Highland Projects

Significant refurbishment projects are to go ahead in the Highlands thanks to a £1.7 million Schools Fund grant from the Scottish Government.

The expenditure approved by The Highland Council’s Education Culture and Sport Committee, will be used to upgrade the Primary Schools at Raasay and Glenelg.  This additional funding will enable these projects to be completed within the current financial year.

In addition the funding will be used to make a significant contribution towards the repair and refurbishment of the swimming pool within the Sutherland Leisure Centre, situated within the Golspie High School campus.

Some of the funding will also be used to invest in energy saving measures within selected schools that are currently high energy consumers.

Councillor Bren Gormley, Vice-Chairman of the Education Culture and Sport Committee, said: “The Schools Fund is a very welcome boost to our capital programme of £19 million.  It enables us to accelerate capital projects and I am delighted that the communities of Golspie, Glenelg and Raasay will benefit.”

Meanwhile, the Committee is to continue progressing plans for constructing a sustainable primary school at Acharacle.  A report, featuring costs and timescales, will be submitted to the committee at its next meeting on 20 September.
