Step closer for Morvern Community Hub following funding announcement

The community of Morvern is delighted to announce that the Highland Council has been successful in securing funding to assist Morvern Community Development Company (MCDC) build a new Community Hub in the village of Lochaline.

The Highland Council applied for £788k from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund and will now work with MCDC to build a new centre adjacent to the village store. The flexibility of the Community Hub design will enable a range of uses to include meeting rooms, office space, business spaces for workers, retail and exhibition space, local information and heritage centre and a fitness suite.

MCDC look forward to working in partnership with the Council to progress this development. MCDC has applied to other funders, including HIE and Morvern Community Trust, for the extra contributions to complete this ambitious project.

Lochaber Councillor Allan Henderson, Chair of the Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee is delighted the community have secured the Regeneration Funding. He said: “The team behind the project have worked very hard so my congratulations go to everyone for their efforts to get this far. These exciting and ambitious plans complements the rest of the work going on in the area to provide more facilities and increase revenue for local activities and I hope MCDC are as successful with their other funding applications so the project can move forward.”

In addition to the Community Hub, MCDC is planning to build 3 single person occupancy houses adjacent to the building for social rent.

The remote west coast community of Morvern has a well-known track record for local development and infrastructure. Recent developments include community owned petrol pumps with 24hr access, the nationally acclaimed Lochaline Harbour and pontoons and a share in a community hydro scheme – all of which generate an income which is reinvested in local projects.
