Caol & Mallaig by-election results
The by-election for a councillor to represent the Caol and Mallaig Ward on The Highland Council has been won by Denis Rixson - Scottish Liberal Democrats - who was one of six candidates who contested the vacancy.
He joins Councillors Allan Henderson (Independent) and Ben Thompson (Independent) in representing Ward 11 on The Highland Council.
Voting was by the single transferable vote and Denis Rixson emerged as the winner at the 5th stage of the count.
Following the count which took place this morning at Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar, Cllr Rixson said: “I would like to thank all the candidates for a respectful campaign, the Highland Council staff for efficiently running the count and I now look forward to working for everyone in the ward.”
The Highland Council is made up of 74 elected members. The new representation is

- Scottish Conservative and Unionist (Con) – 10
- Scottish Green Party (Green) – 1
- Scottish Labour Party (Lab) – 3
- Scottish Liberal Democrats (Lib Dem) – 10
- Scottish National Party (SNP) – 19
- Sutherland Independent Group (SIG) – 1
- Non-aligned (NA) - 2
