Dornoch Aerodrome – temporary suspension of heavy aircraft landings 

The Highland Council confirms that an operational decision has been made to temporarily suspend use of the Dornoch Aerodrome to heavy aircraft (exceeding 2730kg).

This decision has been made in the interests of the safety of aerodrome users and also to prevent any excessive damage to the grass runway surface.  The temporary suspension is now in effect and will remain in place until 23:59 on Tuesday 15th May. 

Dornoch Aerodrome will remain open to light aircraft and all users are reminded that Prior Permission Required (PPR) will remain a requirement for all visiting pilots.

Dornoch Aerodrome has previously processed PPR submissions and hosted landings for a number of heavy aircraft such as the Pilatus PC-12, Piper Malibu, Piper Saratoga and Cessna 208 Caravan.  After Tuesday 15th May PPR applications for heavy aircraft will again be accepted in the normal process.

The Council clearly recognises the importance of the Aerodrome at Dornoch, it will remain open to lighter aircraft, however when it comes to the safety of users it is important that appropriate operational decisions are made to remove or minimise risks and also protect the integrity of the runway surface.
