New Local Access Forum members wanted
The Highland Council is looking for new members to fill its vacancies on the six local outdoor access forums in Caithness, Sutherland, Ross & Cromarty, Inverness & Nairn, Skye & Lochalsh and Lochaber. There are currently at least 2 vacancies on each Forum
The Forums are set up to advise the Council on matters relating to outdoor public access and are a part of the Council’s duty under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003. The Forums play a particularly key role in resolving some access disputes and in Core Path Planning. There are usually 2 meetings per year and occasional other site visits or correspondence over a 5 year term.
The Forums look to maintain a balance of interests by having 3 land managers, 3 access groups and 3 community representatives together with 2 councillors and a member of the disability access panel.
Chair of the Council’s Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Allan Henderson encourages people to come forward. He said: “This is a great opportunity for anyone interested to put their name forward to join one of these local panels. We are looking for a mix of farmers, crofters, foresters and access users including walkers and cyclists as well as representatives from local environmental organisations and path development groups.
“The Forums meet several times a year to consider a variety of access topics including making the countryside more accessible and offering assistance with the resolution of access disputes within the local areas as well as the development of recreation and access strategies to ensure that they cater for a wide range of people and make improvements to the rights of way network. This work can be very rewarding so I encourage anyone interested to apply for one of the vacancies.”
Anyone wishing to apply must have the support of a recognised body whose interest they would represent. Further information on the role of Local Access Forums can be obtained from Philip Waite (01349 868431).
Application forms are available to download from the Highland Council website. The forms can also be requested via email on access@highland.gov.uk or in writing to The Highland Council, Planning and Environment, Development & Infrastructure, Glen Urquhart Road, INVERNESS, IV3 5NX
Applications should be returned by Friday 25 June 2018.
