Merkinch Sports day a resounding success

For once, the weather was not mixed for Merkinch Primary School Sports Days, but the races were.

The sun shone down as the school split their sports day over 3 days, with mixed events at all stages over the three days with a nursery event, p1-3 and p4-7.

Head Teacher Jillian Kean said: “Our sports days this year were all about enjoyment and participation.  At Merkinch we encourage our children to make healthy, happy choices.  The children and families had great fun and we were lucky that the weather allowed them to go ahead as planned.

“The children had practice events and heats and as a result children of similar abilities ran in races together.  From nursery to P7 every child received a sticker for participation. In P4-7 we also celebrated 1st 2nd and 3rd place.  Because the children were in heats, children who would not usually be winners in races had the opportunity to win.

“P6 children displayed their leadership skills and were given responsibility for organising equipment, stickers and ensuring children were in the correct place at the correct time.  We were delighted at their responsible attitudes and they enjoyed that opportunity to take the lead and get involved running the events.”

“Our parents’ race was an idea borrowed from another school, where parents ran in a relay race as a mixed team.  The feedback from our children, teachers and families was that they had had a great time at sports day which ran very smoothly.   This is just what we were aiming for.  We need to say a huge thanks to our parent council who manned the tea and coffee stall at all our events this week.”
