Heavyweight Clash At inverness Games

Next weekend’s City of Inverness Highland Games will stage a preview of one of the most eagerly anticipated clashes at next year’s World Masters Highland Games Heavy Championships.

The Games Committee has today confirmed that four times World Highland Games Champion Alistair Gunn will face three times Olympian and current Braemar Stone World Record Holder Pétur Guðmundsson of Iceland.

Caithness based Gunn is one of only three Scottish Heavies to be invited to compete at the World Highland Games Heavy Championships in Fergus in Canada next month and was originally not expected to compete at Inverness.

However the news that the giant Icelandic Champion is coming to compete at Inverness has clearly led to a change of heart for Gunn to the delight of Games officials.

Games Secretary Gerry Reynolds said: "Alistair and Petur are expected to be among the favourites to win the World title in the 40 years – 45 years Category when the Masters World Championships are staged in Inverness next year.

"Nobody expected to see them throw against each other this year and having them meet at the Games next week is a real bonus for us. We can’t wait to see them in action."
