Light up for Scotland
From Wednesday 24 October to Monday 12 November, floodlights shining on Inverness Castle and the Cathedral will be red in support of this year’s Scottish Poppy appeal.
Ness Bridge, Eilean Donan Castle and Urquhart Castle will also be illuminated in red to mark the centenary of the First World War.
This is part of a wider appeal by Poppy Scotland to light the whole of Scotland red in recognition of the First World War generation who served and sacrificed so much. They invite schools, churches, council buildings, monuments, statues and landmarks to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Gordon Michie, Head of Fundraising at Poppyscotland, said: “It’s fantastic to know that the Highlands will be lighting up red once again for the Scottish Poppy Appeal. We continue to be amazed by the support from this part of the country, but, as we know, there is a large Armed Forces community in this area. We have already received the support of around 80 landmarks that will ‘Light Up Red’ throughout Scotland and more are joining up all the time.
“This year is even more significant than usual, though, as we commemorate 100 years since the signing of the Armistice that led to the end of the First World War. For that reason, we feel that this year’s ‘Light Up Red’ campaign is just as much about local communities – and their desire to say ‘Thank You’ – for that reason, we would encourage all communities – large and small – to come forward and light up red for Poppyscotland!”
If you have a building with external lighting and would like to support the appeal you can contact Jude Smart at j.smart@poppyscotland.org.uk.
