Four Fraserburgh pupils are the winners of the North of Scotland Heat Young Consumer of the Year Competition held on Friday 7th December at Highland Council Chambers, in Inverness.

Youngsters from Fraserburgh Academy, Harris Academy from Dundee, Kinlochleven and Kingussie High School were put through their paces relating to questions on money and credit, consumer law, food and safety and the environment by quiz-master Jamie Stone MSP.

Organised by The Highland Council’s Trading Standards Team with TEC Services, the North of Scotland competition is in its fourth year and schools competing had to vie for a place in the North of Scotland Heat with local eliminator rounds being held in Fort William  and  Inverurie.

The winning team, from Fraserburgh Academy will now go on to represent the North of Scotland area in the Scottish finals which are due to be held at Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh in March 2008 with the winners then representing Scotland in the UK Final of the competition later in 2008.

Presenting prizes to Sarah Duthie S6, Susie Rae S5, Callum Noble S6 and Michael Clark S6 of Fraserburgh Academy, Adam Moore, Finance Services Coordinator of United Utilities said: “United Utilities are delighted to support the North of Scotland Heat of Young Consumer of the Year Competition for the third year running.”  He further added: “The competition gives us a real opportunity to meet students from schools based around the whole of the north of scotland.  Part of our work in partnership with schools nationally is to raise awareness of the work we do in ensuring safe, clean drinking water.  It is important to educate future generations of the valuable resource of clean drinking water and how this resource can be affected by pollution and other environmental issues.”

Councillor John Laing, Chairman of The Highland Council’s TEC Services Committee said: “It is important to educate young persons in their rights and their responsibilities and to highlight the important work that Trading Standards does both in advice and enforcement of consumer law.

“I would like to thanks all those who took part in the competition and to the Trading Standards staff for organising the event. Our thanks must also go to Jamie Stone MSP who continues to support the competition by being quizmaster for the North of Scotland event.”
