Highland Council winter road condition report for Wednesday 30 January 2019

Maps of the Council’s gritting routes by priority and policy are available online at www.highland.gov.uk/gritting

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Road condition reports by The Highland Council’s Community Services for Wednesday 30 January 2019 are as follows:

Lochaber: Fresh fall of snow overnight very heavy over on the west, some areas having 3" to 4”. All morning routes ploughed and gritted, treatment on going, side roads and footpaths are getting done.  Posted 08:40

Nairn: Snow fall overnight throughout the area. All routes are being ploughed and treated with a 20g treatment. No known overnight issues. Posted 07:11

Ross and Cromarty: Roads across the whole area affected by snow of various depths and low road surface temperatures. All priority 1 routes will likely need ploughed and gritted in both directions which means a late start to the secondary routes and a very late start to the other routes.

The tree that was down and blocking the A890 8 miles east of Lochcarron towards Achnasheen has been cleared and the road is now open and passable with care. There are up to 4" of snow along this section towards Lochcarron. Crews undertaking Route 5 (Lochcarron to Kinlochewe ) and Route 9 ( The Beallach ) will be running later than normal due to the delay. Posted at 06:58

Badenoch & Strathspey: There is 5cm of fresh snow cover on roads and crews are out treating all routes by priority. Posted 08:58

Skye & Lochalsh: There is 3" of snow across whole area with 5" on higher ground. Treatment is ongoing on Primary & Secondary Routes. Posted 08:58

South Sutherland: All routes affected by snow this morning with 2” on low ground and 5''on high ground. All routes being bladed & treated as necessary  Posted 09:10

Highland has the longest road network of any council in Scotland and it is not possible to treat every road at the same time. A priority system is applied to treat the areas in greatest need first.

Trunk roads are gritted by BEAR Scotland (North West) for Transport Scotland.
