Crown primary school pupils bake with Alzheimer Scotland

Crown Primary
Crown primary school P5 pupils have been working alongside Woodlands Day Service members to produce their joint cook book.

P5 pupils at Crown Primary School in Inverness have been working with attendees of Alzheimer Scotland’s Woodlands Day Service to produce a cook book together.

The cook book ‘Intergenerational No-Bake Baking Book’ will be available for sale from June and features content and illustrations designed by the P5 pupils in consultation with the attendees of Woodlands Day Service.

Pupils have been working with Alzheimer Scotland since January and their joint project ended last week when they came together to prepare a range of baked treats based on their shared recipe ideas for the cook book.  The treats were successfully sold at the school bake sale on Friday (03/05/2019) with all monies raised in aid of Alzheimer Scotland.

The cook book fundraising initiative has produced many positive outcomes for pupils. Crown Primary’s P5’s have benefitted from the joy of helping others whilst raising awareness about important issues and developing a wide-range of skills in cooking, fundraising, design & marketing.

Councillor John Finlayson, Chair of Highland Council’s Care, Learning and Housing committee, said: “Pupils Highland-wide are using their initiative to support local charities and community groups.  I am particularly proud of the P5 pupils at Crown Primary who, through their fundraising initiative with Alzheimer Scotland, are recognising that we all have a responsibility towards each other.  Their commitment to supporting local causes underpins The Highland Council’s aim to be connected through forming wider links and partnerships in delivering demonstrable benefits for our communities.”

Alzheimer Scotland’s South Highland Locality Leader, Wendy Burges said: “This year’s Intergenerational project with Crown Primary on Skill Sharing, Social Enterprise & Fundraising has been a very exciting partnership. It has been amazing to watch intergenerational relationships build. The project has helped increase the self-esteem and confidence of not only the children, but also the people living with dementia who attend the Woodlands Day Service. To watch the joy and excitement on the faces of all who are taking part has been fantastic – it’s been an honour to be a part of this project. A special thank you, again, to all the pupils for raising funds to support our work by holding the bake sale. Money raised will help us continue our work providing support for people living with dementia in the heart of local communities to make sure nobody faces dementia alone.”

A couple of quotes from people with dementia on their thoughts about the project with Crown Primary School:

“I love being around children, it makes my day.”

“I’ve enjoyed baking with them and helping teach them things, it makes me feel useful again.”
