Mallaig Primary School and Nurseries has had a huge reason for celebration recently after securing the renewal of their Eco-schools Green Flag Award. This internationally-recognised award, administered by Keep Scotland Beautiful, celebrates the measurable and evidenced changes which the school implemented in order to make them a local leader in environmental responsibility.

The targets were set by the children themselves, and through the school's Eco Committee whole-school aspirations and responsibilities were developed, meaning that the pupils themselves can be very proud of what they have achieved. Not only did pupils set targets for day-to-day life in the school, such as recycling and energy-use, but they also reached out to the local community, encouraging the whole population of Mallaig to be more environmentally aware.

Deirdre Beck, Deputy Headteacher of the Mallaig 3-18 Schools' Cluster said: "The award or renewal of an Eco Flag is a very big deal! Our children worked hard to fulfil their self-set targets, and every pupil and member of staff in the school was involved. The hard work wasn't just about the practicalities – every target could also be linked to the pupils' in-class learning, and, of course, the fun-level was huge. We are very, very proud of what they have achieved."

The primary pupils have handed the Eco reigns over to the nursery pupils, who have readily taken to their new responsibilities, and are already keeping a close eye on their older peers.
