Drivers urged to go slow near rural schools.

Motorists on the Isle of Skye and in Lochaber are being warned that part time 20mph speed restrictions are being introduced near two more schools for children’s safety.

The new speed limits come into force at Carbost Primary on the Isle of Skye on Monday 26th February and at Duror Primary, Lochaber on Thursday 8th March, 2007. This addition brings the total number of schools benefiting from new speed limits in Skye and Lochalsh Area to 9, in Lochaber to 19 and in Highland to 91 at present.

Motorists are reminded that if they speed in the vicinity of Highland schools then the penalties will be tough. The Highland Council, Northern Constabulary and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (Highlands and Islands Area) are clear that if motorists are caught speeding near Highland schools where a 20mph limit is in place, then robust enforcement action will be taken by both the Police and the Procurator Fiscal Service.

The new 20mph speed limits will come into affect Mondays to Fridays during school term times at: Carbost from 08:40 to 09:00 and 15:10 to 15:25; and at Duror from 08:15 to 09:05 and 14:25 to 15:25.

The other schools in Skye and Lochalsh Area with 20mph speed restrictions are: Auchtertyre Kyle, Kyleakin, Loch Duich, Plockton, Portree and Uig Primaries and Portree High. In Lochaber Area the other schools with 20mph speed restrictions are: Ardgour, Arisaig, Banvie, Caol, Fort William, Fort William RC, Invergarry, Inverlochy, Lady Lovat, Lochaline, Lochyside RC, Mallaig, Roy Bridge, Spean Bridge, Strontian, Upper Achintore Primaries; and Lochaber and Mallaig High Schools.
