Holocaust Memorial Day, 27 January, Inverness remembers
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) on 27 January is the international day to remember the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The Inverness Interfaith Group is commemorating HMD with an event at the Inverness Town House, 7 - 9 pm on Monday 27th January 2020. All are welcome to attend.
Those attending will be welcomed by the Depute Provost, Cllr Graham Ross, who said: "This year’s theme for HMD 2020 is 'Stand Together'. HMD gives an opportunity for people to come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future, and to challenge prejudice and the language of hatred."
The guest speaker for the evening is Judy Russell, who is a 2nd generation Holocaust survivor and who will talk about the experiences of her family. Both of Judy’s parents spent time in Nazi camps and suffered family loss. Her talk will also focus on her step-father Ernest Levy who arrived in Scotland in 1961 and who has talked and written about his wartime experiences. Ernest Levy wrote two books about his life, 'Just One More Dance' and 'The Single Light', and he died in Aug 2009 in his home in Glasgow aged 84.
Rolf Schmidt, Chairman of the Inverness Interfaith Group, said: "We are pleased to hold our third HMD event in the Town Hall, Inverness and to have Judy as our guest speaker. Towards the end of the evening, we will welcome pupils from Cradlehall Primary School to participate in a candle lighting ceremony - a traditional way of remembering those who died and reflecting on the messages of the day."
