Tha Feum Againn air Ceannard Ùr!/We Need a New Head Teacher!
Gaelic Medium Pupils at Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar (Lochaber Primary School) have come out fighting in the battle to recruit a new Gaelic speaking Head Teacher.
In a filming project driven by school-based Parent Council, Comhairle nam Pàrant Loch Abar, school and nursery pupils showcase their wonderful school and its talented pupils in what they hope will be an enticing short film. The shared hope across the school community is that the film will grab the attention of a suitable candidate for the vacant Head Teacher position. In particular, they hope to spark the imagination for someone who might not previously have considered this opportunity.
Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar is situated three miles west of Fort William in the village of Caol and children from across the Lochaber area can attend the school. The school recently won the prestigious Gaelic Medium Award at this year’s Scottish Education Awards. This honour recognises schools that have developed a positive and progressive approach to Gaelic Medium Education. Amongst stiff competition nationally Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar scooped this accolade, which is no mean achievement for a school in only its fourth year since opening.
The short production, entitled “Tha Feum Againn air Ceannard Ùr!”, which translates as “We Need a New Head Teacher!” showcases the wonderful school setting, which nestles between Loch Eil, River Lochy and the Caledonian Canal, with the panoramic Nevis Range sitting in the background. Thinking of moving with a young family? Fort William, known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK, is a vibrant, growing town. The natural geography provides an impressive range of activities on the doorstep: mountain bike trails, hill walking, skiing, swimming, fishing and sailing to name but a few. There are very active local shinty, rugby and football clubs, and the town has a sports centre with a 25m swimming pool and gymnasium.
The current school roll is 106 children, with 34 children enrolled in the Sgoil-àraich (Nursery). Speaking on behalf of Comhairle nam Pàrant Loch Abar, Chairperson Aoibhinn Lawlor said, “We know that Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar would be perfect for a dynamic, enthusiastic Head Teacher. We are looking for someone who will build on the successes of the school and has a shared interest in fostering the Gaelic language and culture, which is at the heart of the school’s ethos. If you move to Lochaber you will be rewarded with a lovely friendly school, the opportunity to be part of a wider community and a very good quality of life, in a truly spectacular part of the country. Come and visit us to see!”
On behalf of Comhairle nan Sgoilearan Loch Abar (Pupil Council), Jack, Evie, Calum Archie and Shauna shared the following, “We hope that this video gets shared to lots of possible candidates throughout the Gaelic community. This school is so important to all of us and we would love to have a Gaelic speaking Head Teacher that is passionate about being part of our wonderfully unique school community!”
