Roads maintenance programme agreed by members of Isle of Skye and Raasay Area Committee

Members this week approved the 2020/21 Roads Maintenance Programme for the Isle of Skye and Raasay areas.

The programme is based on the current priorities but may of course be subject to change.

The Communities and Place Committee local allocations budget has not yet been determined so the roads maintenance programme is based on the 2019/20 budget. Should the budget change then the programme will either be curtailed or increased as appropriate.

£1,147,200 is in the revenue budget and will include winter allocation of £497,553; cyclic maintenance of £576,624; £17,597 on drainage; spray injection of £9,162; gully emptying at £5,905 and bridge maintenance of £40,360.

Capital works scheduled include structural overlay/inlay of £356,953 and surface dressing at £246,755.

Some examples of the roads which will be included in the 2020/21 Roads Maintenance Programme for 2020/21 are:

  • Regulate/overlay on the U4856 Suladale road, the C1229 Claigan road, the C1225 Quiraing road, the C1231 Vatten road, the B8083 Broadford to Elgol (Loch Slappin) road, the U4816 Portree to Home Farm road to name but a few
  •  Surface dressing for the U4748 Talisker road, the C1224 Ardvasar to Aird of Sleat road, C1235 Raasay road, the A863 Sligachan to Drynoch junction and the Clahamish to Bernisdale road to name some
  • There is also a lay-by extension planned for the C1225 at the Quiraing.

The Isle of Skye and Raasay roads maintenance programme has been approved by local councillors pending confirmation of the Council’s Community and Place Committee budget allocations for the area.

The indicative programme is based on current engineering and safety priories and may alter if significant events impact priorities and resources.

Isle of Skye and Raasay Area Committee chair, Cllr John Gordon, said: “We know how much of a priority our roads are in Skye and Raasay due to the high numbers of tourists that visit the area each year.

“Local members are committed to ensuring we have the best possible roads within the available resources.”
