Highland Council recognises staff on International Year of the Nurse 2020

Since 2012 Health & Social Care Nurses & Allied Health Professionals have worked together with social workers, social care staff and education to support the health of children across Highland.   

2020 is the International Year of the Nurse with the 12th of May marking the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth and the contribution of nurses and allied health professional to society.   In this celebratory year, no-one could have imagined that we would find ourselves in the middle of a global health crisis which has meant that more than ever the contribution of nurses and all healthcare workers would be so significant in our communities.

During this time, many of our health staff remain on the frontline working within Health and Social Care during this pandemic, visiting families in their homes, identifying health needs and supporting the healthy growth and development of infants, children and young people and providing support to parents and carers to ensure children receive the best start in life.  A number of health staff have volunteered to return to roles in NHS Highland using previous knowledge and experience in areas of critical care, rehabilitation and midwifery. 

On this International Nurses Day please think of all healthcare professionals here and all over the world who have put their own concerns and anxieties behind them to do what they have been trained to do and care for others.

Councillor Bill Lobban, Convenor of The Highland Council, said: “I speak from experience how invaluable frontline staff are in normal times. But during this appalling pandemic we see them putting their daily lives on hold for the protection of others. They have my respect and that of people from across the world. We simply would not survive without them".
