Overnight essential surfacing improvements - A82 Drumnadrochit to Temple Pier

Issued by BEAR Scotland

  • Strict physical distancing protocols in place to protect teams
  • Works begin Sunday 14 June for four nights
  • Overnight road closures in place for safety, 8pm – 6am

Essential work to address a section of the A82 between Drumnadrochit and Temple Pier is set to get underway from Sunday night.

It is crucial that essential surfacing at this section of the A82 is carried out in order to maintain the integrity and safety of the trunk road network at this location, helping to ensure it remains safe and reliable for key workers, deliveries and those making essential journeys.

The improvements originally began in March but were postponed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The overnight project has now been rescheduled to start on Sunday 14 June and will take place over four nights between 8pm and 6am, with works due to be completed by 6am Thursday 18 June.

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government guidance, will be in place to ensure all site personnel remain safe once the project gets underway.  New safe operation procedures and risk assessments have also been developed to ensure teams are kept safe throughout the project.

Due to the narrow width of the A82 at this location, work will be undertaken using a full road closure to ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists. To help minimise disruption, amnesties will be provided at 9pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am each night.  During these times vehicles will be safely escorted through the site under a 10mph convoy. Emergency services will be able to pass through at all times and local access for residents living within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

The A82 will remain open during the daytime to keep disruption to a minimum, however, to ensure the safety of motorists a speed restriction of 30mph will remain in place as traffic will be running on a temporary surface.

Consultation has been carried out with emergency services and relevant stakeholders to make them aware of the plans and share information about the project in advance.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “The safety of our employees, our supply chain and local community remains a top priority at this difficult time, and all personnel will be subject to strict physical distancing protocols in line with Scottish Government guidance to ensure they are kept safe. Thorough risk assessments have been developed and cleansing stations will be implemented on site to ensure all staff remain safe.

“It is essential this work is completed so that the A82 can be repaired and ensure the trunk road network remains safe for key workers, deliveries and those making essential journeys.

“Due to the narrow road widths, the traffic management is essential for ensuring the safety of roadworkers and motorists. We’ve taken steps to help minimise disruption as much as possible by carrying out the project overnight and arranging for amnesties to be in place to allow any waiting traffic to pass through the project.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience while we carry out the project.  Our teams will do all they can to ensure that this project is completed as quickly and as safely as possible.”
