New safety camera location A836 at Ardgay
Issued by the Northern Safety Camera Partnership
A new flexible deployment location has been identified within the 30mph limit at Ardgay on the A836.
Following concerns from residents and at the request of the Highland Council the North Safety Camera Unit will start to enforce at Ardgay with a mobile safety camera van this week to work towards reducing the number of collisions along this stretch of road. Current speed survey results show that over 1000 motorists a week are driving in excess of the 30mph speed limit at Ardgay.
Kenny Sutherland, Manager of the North Safety Camera Unit, said: "The flexible deployment scheme allows us to enforce at locations of concern to local residents, Police Scotland and the local authority for a maximum of 3 months with the aim of improving driver behaviour by encouraging motorists to slow down and drive within the speed limit in areas where there are other road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. At Ardgay we will be targeting motorists who are exceeding the 30mph speed limit to make this road safer for all road users. Drivers need to appreciate that the speed limits are in place for their own safety, that of their passengers and other road users and to drive in excess of these limits is breaking the law.”
Lisa MacKellaich, Highland Council’s Road Safety Officer said: “For use primarily in high footfall areas, where specific criteria is met, as a tool to encourage active travel - Highland Council are supportive of the safety camera flexible deployment scheme and hope the presence of safety camera enforcement in Ardgay will act as a gentle reminder to drivers of the importance of speed compliance.”
