Temporary Road Closures During City Events

Temporary road closures will be in operation in the Bught Park area of Inverness over the next two weekends as the city plays host to two of Scotland’s most important cultural events of the summer as part of the Highland 2007 celebrations.

On Saturday July 21st and Sunday July 22nd, Bught Park will be the venue for the World Highland Games Heavy Championships which is returning to Scotland for the first time since 1995 as the star attraction at this year’s Tullochs Inverness Highland Games. On Sunday July 28th, the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association will play host to over 4500 Bandsmen when the European Pipe Band Championships will be staged on the banks of the River Ness.

Before, during and after both events temporary road closures will be in place which will affect drivers in the city.

The area affected will be the sections of Bught Road and Ness Walk between the junction with Bught Avenue and the junction with Ballifeary Lane.  During the Highland Games weekend the temporary closures come into place at 8am on Saturday 21 and will remain in force until 11pm on Sunday 22 July. The following weekend the European Pipe Band Championships will see temporary closures in operation between 8am and 8pm on Saturday 28th July.

Access to residential homes and other riverside properties will not be affected, nor will access for pedestrians. Alternative routes for drivers will available and will be sign-posted.

Event organisers are advising spectators coming to the events to use public transport where at all possible and to set off early. Full parking facilities will be available on site for disabled drivers and some limited parking will be available at the event site. Drivers are being urged to where possible, use the alternative car parks located at the Town House, Highland Council HQ, Rose Street, St Andrew’s Cathedral and Farraline Park to help ease congestion in the Bught Park area.
