Update About Legionnaires’ Disease

Mackay’s Hotel in Strathpeffer plans to reopen its accommodation buildings on Friday 20 July subject to final discussions with The Highland Council’s Environmental Health Officers. The leisure centre is expected to remain closed pending a management decision by the hotel.

A risk assessment has been carried out and an action plan has been agreed between Environment Health Officer and the company which owns the hotel. The action plan addresses maintenance issues and future water quality monitoring.

Head of the Council’s  Environmental Health and Trading Standards, Alistair Thomson said: “I am pleased to say there have been no more cases and the health of the known cases is continuing to improve. The results from samples taken from the hotel have been negative. There is therefore no direct microbiological link between the samples submitted to the laboratory and the affected persons. It is therefore not possible to confirm the actual source of the outbreak using microbiological evidence. The Outbreak Control Team is however satisfied that on the basis of the pattern of disease and the association of the first three cases with the hotel, we have taken appropriate precautionary action to control the outbreak and protect the public from a potential risk. We acknowledge the co-operation of the hotel staff and management with the investigation.”
