New Speed Limit and One Way System At City School

In a move to improve the safety of school children, The Highland Council is introducing a new one way system and a part-time 20mph speed limit for drivers at Central Primary school in Inverness. 

The one way system, which will come into operation on Monday (23 July), will mean that drivers will no longer be able to join Planefield Road from Tomnahurich Street.  This route is often used as a “Rat Run” for drivers to avoid the traffic lights at the Kenneth Street Junction. 
From Monday Planefield Road will become one way from the junction with Duncraig Street to Tomnahurich Street.  This is the area at the rear of the school and is the usual entry and exit to and from the school for pupils and parents.

The part-time 20 mph speed limit will come into affect when pupils return to school on Tuesday 14 August. It will operate on school days from 0800 to 0815; 0840 to 0900; 0915 to 0930; 1215 to 1230; 1245 to 1300; 1315 to 1330 and 1500 to 1515.
 
The Highland Council is committed to improving safety around schools and is in the process of rolling out a programme of 20 mph limits at all its primary and secondary schools. 32 of the 44 schools in the Inverness area have already got the restrictions in place and across the Highlands the total figure is 106.

Anyone caught speeding in the vicinity of Highland schools could face a tough penalty.  The Highland Council, Northern Constabulary, the Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service are clear that if motorists are caught speeding near a school where a 20mph limit is in place, robust enforcement action will be taken by the Police and the Procurator Fiscal Service.
