Drivers Warned To Slow Down Near Highland Schools

Motorists are being warned that a 30mph speed limit and a part-time 20mph restriction will be introduced to ensure children’s safety at a Highland High School and at an Island Primary School.

A new permanent 30mph speed limit will be on Plockton Airstrip road at Plockton High School and will come into effect on Monday 6 August.  A part-time 20mph speed limit on the same road will also become effective from this date but will not become operational until pupils return to school on Tuesday 14th August.

Drivers should be aware that the part time 20mph restriction applies on school days from 8.40am to 9.00am; 12.55pm to 1.55pm and 3.40pm to 3.55pm.

Also on the 6 August a 30 mph speed limit will be introduced in the Inverarish area on the Isle of Raasay with a part-time 20 mph limit at the school starting when the new term starts on 14 August.
 
The part-time 20 mph limit, near the school, is timed to be operational from 0845 to 0900 and 1500 to 1515 on school days.
 
Raasay Primary will be the seventh of the 16 schools in the Eilean a’ Cheò Ward to have a 20 mph speed limit in place.  Work is at various stages at all the other schools in the Ward as part of the Council’s commitment to install 20 mph restrictions at all its primary and secondary schools.

Anyone caught speeding in the vicinity of Highland schools could face a tough penalty.  The Highland Council, Northern Constabulary, the Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service are clear that if motorists are caught speeding near a school where a 20mph limit is in place, then robust enforcement action will be taken by the Police and the Procurator Fiscal Service.
