Seachdain Spòrs Gàidhlig
Spòrs Gàidhlig, Comunn na Gàidhlig’s Outdoor Education organisation offer a wide range of organised outdoor education opportunities for young people to use their Gaelic linguistic skills whilst taking part in a wide range of sporting activities.
During the last week of the school term Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh pupils participated in a fun filled week of outdoor learning activities.
The young people enjoyed taking part in a range of popular outdoor activities which included stand-up paddle boarding.
To learn new skills in the outdoors the Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh pupils engaged in bush craft workshops, this included learning how to be creative in the skill of shelter building.
Lena Walker, Gaelic Manager Highland Council said, “Learning in an outdoor environment is an exciting and motivating experience for our children’s learning experiences. By exploring the outdoors and taking part in activities in the local area, the curriculum can be offered in new and different contexts. Importantly, it offers our children the opportunity to enhance, broaden and consolidate their language usage and learning.”
Donald Morris, Manager of Spòrs Gàidhlig said, "It has been a delight for us to be working with young people from Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh. The weather was at times not on our side, the young people did enjoy the sessions and it most certainly did encourage and gave them the opportunity to use their Gaelic language skills.”
Steven Kellow, Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s Funding and Projects Officer, said: “We are happy to support these activities as an important partnership between ourselves, the Highland Council and Spòrs Gàidhlig. These activities greatly encourage young people to use their Gaelic out-with the school setting and we are sure that they have had a fun time while doing so.”
The Highland Council wish to thank Bòrd na Gàidhlig for their support for the event.
