Highland High School Creates Community Archive.

A community archive that will assist local history and genealogy research will be launched today Friday 15th June, 2007 at Glen Urquhart High School in Drumnadrochit.

Based in the Community Library in Glen Urquhart High School, the archive project is one of the main cornerstones of the school’s celebration of Highland Year of Culture 2007.

Deputy Head Teacher Mrs Josie Mackenzie who oversaw the development of the project said: “This is the culmination of a joint venture between the school, the local Glenurquhart Heritage Society and the Highland Council’s award winning Am Baile website.

“The Am Baile website will provide access to school registers and logbooks - subject to Data Protection rules. A full set of Glenurquhart Bulletins can also be accessed, as can various local histories including William Mackay’s classic “Urquhart and Glenmoriston”.”

Also on line are a variety of historic local maps as well as the Heritage Group’s collection of photographs.

Within the Community Library will be a dedicated computer for users of the archive and it is hoped that those interested in tracing their Glenurquhart ancestry will make good use of the census records now available. War memorial records and some baptismal and marriage records will also be available for consultation.

The Library has been enhanced with the production of four large banners each with a local theme designed by Mr Andrew Hay of the school’s Technology department.

Librarian Christine Matheson hopes to see the addition of an archive leading to an increase in the numbers of those using what is an already popular facility.
