River Ness Hydro Naming Competition Top 10 announced

The Highland Council recently launched a competition in partnership with Science Skills Academy to name the new hydroelectric generator which is being built on the River Ness.

The scheme uses an Archimedes Screw to harness the energy of the water flowing down the River Ness and will generate ~550,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually.

The building and the interactive visitor experience are being developed to inspire people and the Council invited school pupils from across the Highlands to design a poster and think up a name which captures the main themes of the Hydro project: Sustainability, Renewable Energy, Climate Change and STEM Learning.

The Council received over 100 submissions from schools across Highland. The posters and names were fantastically creative and really showcased the talent of Highland school pupils. Thank you to everyone who participated in the competition.

The project team are delighted to announce the top 10 which will be placed on-site during the construction of the Hydro to help inform the public and keep the builders inspired.

The winner of the naming competition will be selected from the top 10 entries by The Highland Council and the project’s partners, an announcement will be made in the new year.
