Skye children celebrate World Book Day 2007
A story-time was held today (1st March) at Broadford Library hosted by Cindie Reiter, Highland Libraries Reader Development Co-ordinator to mark World Book Day.
Children from local playgroups, nurseries and the Primary School enjoyed the stories and rhymes and were presented with a Bookstart “Treasure Box” and a “goody bag” with a pencil, paper, a balloon and a special Bookstart teddy bear.
At Portree Library, Joey Graham, the Adult Basic Education Co-ordinator and Vicki Samuels from “Training and Adult Guidance” gave some of their clients a guided tour of the library. This included the People’s Network computers and the new “Quick Reads” collection.
The Quick Reads initiative for emergent readers was launched on World Book Day 2006 with the publication of twelve exciting, short, fast-paced books by leading bestselling writers including Maeve Binchy, Richard Branson and Minette Walters. A further twelve were published in May 2006 and eight new titles were published on World Book Day 2007 by authors including Ricky Tomlinson, Kerry Katona and John Simpson.
David Linton Highland Council’s Area Libraries Officer said: “Libraries play a key role in ensuring that learners have access to these books through their partnership work with adult literacy providers and their support for the BBC RaW campaign.”
