Highland Council to support Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week)

The first Seachdain na Gàidhlig (World Gaelic Week), which aims to celebrate Scottish Gaelic across the world has received unanimous support by The Highland Council.

Members of the Council’s Gaelic Committee have welcomed the new initiative and endorsed a programme of activities and events that will be delivered by the Council’s Gaelic Team in partnership with schools, community groups and other agencies.

Gaelic Committee Chair Cllr Calum Munro said: “Seachdain na Gàidhlig is described as ‘Gaelic for all’ through official events and community activities which will provide the opportunity for both Gaelic speakers and those without the language to take part in a way that suits them.

“Highland Council is contributing to the Seachdain na Gàidhlig programme through promotional, schools and adult activities aimed at encouraging Gaelic speakers and learners to use their language.

“I am delighted that the spotlight is being shone on Gaelic in the family, our communities, in government and public bodies, in education and business and in the arts, culture and heritage. Here’s hoping that this first Seachdain na Gàidhlig becomes an annual celebration for many years to come.”

Councillors welcomed a presentation on Seachdain na Gàidhlig by its Director, Ms Joy Dunlop and Administrator, Mr Grant McFarlane.

Seachdain na Gàidhlig, (World Gaelic Week), will be a seven-day programme of events, taking place from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 March 2022.
